Yayasan Gajah Sumatera, Indonesia

The organisation

Yagasu is an Indonesian NGO dedicated to climate action, conservation, and community development. In 2001, Yagasu initially focused on Sumatran elephant and forest conservation but expanded its efforts to coastal ecosystem restoration and climate action projects, including blue carbon and agroforestry. Their approach combines local community engagement, capacity building, and scientific research to address environmental challenges. Yagasu operates under international and national frameworks, promoting sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, and economic empowerment for local communities.

Yagasu’s current projects focus on coastal ecosystem restoration, climate change mitigation, and community empowerment. These include large-scale mangrove restoration, sustainable aquaculture, and carbon offset initiatives. They also engage in eco-friendly product development and environmental education to support local communities. Yagasu’s efforts aim to enhance biodiversity, protect endangered species, and create sustainable livelihoods for coastal populations.

Yagasu’s project locations span various regions across Indonesia, with a strong focus on coastal areas in Sumatra, including Aceh, North Sumatra, Riau, and Jambi. These areas are key sites for their mangrove restoration, carbon sequestration, and sustainable development initiatives. The projects are strategically placed in regions where environmental degradation has significantly impacted local communities and ecosystems.
